Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO). Perfomer l’architecture is an exhibition organized at FRAC-Centre Val de la Loire, Orléans (15/4/2022-31/12/2023), by Beatrice Lampariello and Andrea Anselmo (UCLouvain), Boris Hamzeian (Centre Pompidou), Nabila Metaïr and Abdelkader Damani (FRAC-Centre Val de la Loire). The exhibition illustrates the disruptive, and activist work of the UFO group of architects (Carlo Bachi, Lapo Binazzi, Patrizia Cammeo, Riccardo Foresi, Titti Maschietto) between 1967 and 1978. Against a backdrop of student protests and the occupation of architecture faculties, UFO organized happenings designed to destabilize the rituals and myths of capitalist society and encourage creativity and imagination. Close to the semiological theories of Umberto Eco, UFO sees its works as ‘signs’ in the service of counter-communication, and as founding acts of a new kind of architecture that advocates the absence of any disciplinary delimitation.
